Abstract

The anticonvulsant effect of active sulfur(A.S.: Kum-Eck tan in Chinese medicine) on the cardiazol and picrotoxin convulsion and the synergistic effect of A.S. on the morphine analgesia to mice were observed.
The effect of A.S. on the toxicity (LD5o) of alloxan and carbon tetrachloride(CC14) to mice, and the blood sugar level and the serum transaminase(GOT and GPT) activity in rabbits induced by these agents were investigated.
The results obtained were as follows;
1. The average time required for onset of cardiazol convulsion on mice was signific antly prolonged by pretreatment of A.S. but picrotoxin convulsion was not affected.
2. The analgesic effect of morphine to mice pretreated with A.S. was remarkably increased.
3. The LD50 of alloxan to mice pretreated with A.S. was increased.
4. The hyperglycemic effect of alloxan to rabbits pretreated with A.S. was decreased and the hypoglycemic effect of CCI4 was inhibited by A.S. pretreatment.
5. The increased serum GOT, GPT activity produced by alloxan and CC14 were decreased by the pretreatment of A.S..
